Building a More Sustainable A2Z Communications
Why we are shifting from hardware dependency toward SaaS, AI, automation and agentic services

The hardships of a hardware-led business have clarified our direction: A2Z Communications must increasingly create value through intellectual property, recurring digital services, software and intelligent automation—not through dependency on inventory and once-off transactions. |
Hardware taught us important lessons
Hardware has been part of the history of A2Z Communications and remains relevant where it forms part of the right customer solution. But experience has also shown us the structural difficulties of building a sustainable business around hardware transactions alone.
Hardware requires working capital. Margins are often compressed by supplier pricing and intense competition. Product availability, logistics, exchange-rate movements, lead times, warranties and rapid obsolescence can all affect an order before the client has even received the equipment.
Perhaps most importantly, the customer can easily reduce the conversation to price. When multiple suppliers can provide the same device, differentiation becomes difficult and the relationship can become transactional rather than strategic.
That does not make hardware a bad business. It means we need to be disciplined about the role it plays in our future.
Why we are changing the model
The question we have had to ask is simple: do we want A2Z Communications to remain primarily dependent on the movement and resale of technology, or do we want to build a business that increasingly owns intellectual property, creates recurring value and helps clients transform the way they operate?
Our direction is the latter.
We are therefore increasing our focus on Software-as-a-Service, artificial intelligence, business automation, cloud platforms, managed digital services and agentic AI. These are not additions to our catalogue for the sake of following technology trends. They are part of a deliberate effort to create a more resilient and scalable business model.
From selling products to solving business problems
This transition changes the starting point of our customer conversations.
Instead of beginning with, ‘What equipment do you need?’, we want to begin with, ‘What business problem are you trying to solve?’
The right answer may still include hardware. But it may instead be a web platform, a workflow automation, an AI assistant, a customer-service agent, a cloud integration, an internal knowledge system or a purpose-built software application.
The technology becomes the means. The business outcome becomes the product.
Why SaaS matters to us
SaaS gives us the opportunity to create useful technology once and continue delivering value through it over time. That changes both the client relationship and the economics of the business.
A once-off transaction ends when the order is fulfilled. A well-designed software platform can support a client every day and generate predictable recurring revenue while continuing to improve.
Our work on the A2Z HR SaaS platform is part of this direction. It represents our ambition to build proprietary technology around real business needs, rather than relying exclusively on project-based revenue.
AI and agentic services are the next layer
Artificial intelligence is also changing what clients can reasonably expect from digital systems. The first phase of digital transformation moved information and processes online. The next phase will increasingly allow digital systems to understand requests, analyse information, make recommendations and take action within defined permissions.
Agentic AI is particularly important because it shifts software from being something a person merely uses to something that can increasingly participate in a workflow.
For businesses, this could mean agents that help qualify leads, respond to enquiries, prepare reports, schedule appointments, follow up on actions, support employees, analyse performance or coordinate tasks across multiple systems.
Our opportunity is not to sell AI as a buzzword. It is to apply AI where it can reduce cost, save time, improve service, increase productivity or unlock a better customer experience.
A more sustainable revenue mix
The A2Z Communications business model we are building should increasingly combine several complementary forms of revenue: recurring SaaS subscriptions, AI and automation implementation, custom software development, digital transformation projects, managed services, support retainers, cloud and integration services, and selective hardware opportunities where they make commercial sense.
This gives us the opportunity to reduce our dependence on low-margin, once-off transactions without discarding the technical knowledge and customer relationships we built through hardware.
Our goal is a healthier balance: more recurring revenue, more intellectual property, deeper customer relationships and greater scalability.
What this means for A2Z Communications
The transition will require more than launching new services. We must improve how we productise our expertise, how we sell, how we measure customer value and how consistently we deliver.
We also need the discipline to avoid building technology simply because we can. Every SaaS product, automation or AI service must solve a sufficiently important business problem and have a credible path to commercial value.
The hardships of the hardware business have therefore been useful. They have forced us to look at our economics, question our assumptions and decide what kind of technology company we want to become.
Our direction
A2Z Communications will continue to support hardware opportunities when they complement a broader client solution and make commercial sense. But hardware will no longer define the limits of what we can become.
We are moving higher up the technology value chain—from supplying technology to designing, building and managing the digital intelligence around it.
Our long-term objective is straightforward: less dependency on inventory, more intellectual property; less reliance on once-off transactions, more recurring value; less price-led selling, more outcome-led partnerships.
That is the more sustainable A2Z Communications we are building.
“Less dependency on inventory. More intellectual property. More recurring value. Greater scalability.”
